Transport Timeline

-      Literacy (20mins): Next week we will be visiting the transport museum.  For your homework we would like you to create a timeline of modes of transport.  The time-line should span from the Roman Era to today.  Please include detailed descriptions and images or sketches.

  1. Timeline of Britain's modes transport since the Roman ear at 1AD

    1st century AD (0AD)

A vast network of roads exists in Britain. These roads were made out of stone Flint and gravel. Usually, a ditch was dug on ether side of the road for drainage. Carts use to go on the road built for it being pulled by two or more horse/s. Additionally, Roman merchant ships were beginning to carry 1,000 tons of cargo.

    12th century AD (1100)

The compass was invented in Europe. It helped lots of lost sailors find their back. Moreover, the rudder comes into use in England. The rudder helped navigate or tow the ship to its destination.

    1761 (17th century AD)

The bridge water canal opens. After this, many other canals are built. Then all the rivers and lakes got connected in Britain. This made travelling from London to the North much easier.

    1783 - 1785

The hot air and hydrogen balloons were invented. Two men flew across the English Channel in a hydrogen balloon. These balloons fly high into the sky. Additionally, these balloons are very rare mode of transport.

    1784,1815 - 1819

Lionel Lukin invents the life boat. The life boats were attached to ships. If the ship was sinking, the life boat would detach from the ship and inflate on the water so people can escape. Since then the life boats became mandatory on large ships.

    1835 (19th century AD)

The first passenger railway opens. After the passenger railway opened the railways got more busier. To add, because the trains got busier and a huge network was built across Britain and by adding more trains.

    1838

The first elevated railway is built in London. As the elevated railway was built, there was less rush.

    1840

The great age of railways began. Soon after the 1838s the rush increased so a new network is built across Britain.

    1863

The first underground railway opens. The trains were powered by steam. The underground railway opened because street level was becoming too full.

    1885

Finally, cars are invented. The inventor was called Carl Benz. Cars weren't as popular as now. Only 1 in 10 family's had a car at that time.

    1890

The first electric train runs in the London Underground. The electric train was created because the steam trains emitted so much smoke that people nearly choked. Also, these trains were mostly silent.

    1900 (20th century AD)

Again to try and reduce the amount of rush electric trams were built and started running in many towns.

    1919

Planes were invented at this point of time. The planes used to take passengers to a different destination where carts or ships can't go.

    1930

In most of UK's towns, their trams were replaced by buses. The buses could travel to more places than the trams as trams need a wide space travel on.

    1995 - 2016(2020)

A new line is put in the London Underground. This is because that more people are coming into Britain.

  2. Transport Timeline
The first type of transport was till 4000 BC to 3000 BC and they were horses . They are really fast an they went on a lumpy road , so it was pretty uncomfortable . Then the second type of transport was the wheel invented in Iraq and it was made out f wood and went about 18 mph s it was quiet fast . 400 years after the wheel there was sailing boats also made out of wood and we still use them today . After sailing boats there were camels and they weren't as fast but they had a lot more energy . A little bit later ships were made to travel faster on sea and only a tiny bit more comfortable . Then in the 12th century compasses were made in europe so a massive jump from the ships . Now we have more comfortable boats , ships and cars !!!

  3. The romans had all sorts of transportations. Walking and chariots were one of them. If you sat on a cart it would feel horrible as there are many cobble stones the wooden wheel would go over. It would have been very bumpy. The most comfortable travelling device were boats but they were still quite dangerous because it was made of wood so it could set fire.
After the romans were Anglo-Saxons. The travelling was not uncommon. They still used the same roads the romans did. However, off the main routes could be risky business. Travellers were told to shout, blow horns or make lots of noise to ask for more space.
After Anglo – Saxons were Vikings. They mostly used boats. People travelled widely during this age for several different reasons:
    • For trade
    • For battle
    • For socializing
    • For feasts
    • For games
As because of topography of Norse lands, people decided that a water route should be preferred. If that wasn’t able they would travel by land.
Since the Viking age ended Norman age started. The Normans used boats, horseback or carts pulled by cattle. But the most annoying thing is if there was more of these cattle, people would have to avoid stepping on horse dung!!!
Tudors were the next age and there use of transport is by using pumpkin coaches, made of wood and also ships were used. They also had carts to help out too.
Then the Victorians came and they invented up much more like steam trains but they realised steam was so dirty and smelly so they invented the first underground electrical trains as there was no space around the city. The trains always rushed from direction to direction.
Now 2016 we have all sorts of vehicles like cars, planes, buses, bike, motorcycles, Lories, train, submarine, ferry, boats, helicopter, jet, hot air balloon and feet. It is easier to get around to different places.
