Tooth Decay

-      Literacy (20mins): In science we have been looking at how teeth decay. This week we would like you to write an explanation of how teeth decay and how to look after them.

A good website for help is the Children’s University of Manchester.

Try to include the features of an explanation text:

o   Present tense

o   Paragraphs

o   Time adverbials eg. next, after, finally

o   Cause and effect conjunctions and adverbials eg. if, so, because, however

  1. Tooth decay is caused by not brushing your teeth or smoking which only discolours our teeth. If you ate potatoes all day you could get a tummy bug but your teeth would hardly get harmed except for some pieces of potatoes. The things you should not eat are burgers and other junk food.

    WE CAN LOOK AFTER ARE TEETH BY BRUSHING THEM AND NOT EATING SUGAR.

  2. You get tooth decay if you eat a sweet and you don't brush your teeth before you go to bed. Sugar turns to acid from the bacteria in plaque. Plaque is the sticky surface on your teeth. When the sugar gets turned to acid by the bacteria it attacks your teeth and takes out the calcium and minerals. Then teeth start to rot and go black. To look after your teeth don't eat sugary snacks between meals, eat low sugar food and brush your teeth twice.

    If you don't brush your teeth they will rot.
    What makes your teeth rot :
    Not brushing your teeth,
    smoking,
    too much sugar [ fizzy drinks , chocolate , sweets and brown sugar ]
    and drinking alcahol .
    These are the tings that make your teeth rot .

    How to make your teeth nice and clean

    If you brush your teeth they will not rot
    What makes you teeth not rot :
    brushing your teeth ,
    mouthwash ,
    fruit and veg [ carrots , apples ,lettues , pears ]
    floss
    and floride .
    those are the things that keep your teeth nice and clean .

  4. How do teeth decay:
    When we eat sugars germs that are in our mouth and they feed on these sugars and release acid that attack our teeth and cause decay. These germs don’t always come but they usually do. Our teeth are made out of three layers:
    Enamel (outermost)
    Dentine (middle)
    Pulp (innermost)
    Decay attacks the enamel first because it is the first layer and it is also the hardest layer. It then goes deeper and causes sensitivity and pain.
    How to protect teeth:
    You should brush your teeth twice a day every day, once any time in the day and once in the night before going to bed. Don’t eat anything after you have brushed your teeth in the night.
    It is good to use fluoride toothpaste so your enamel will harden and get really hard.
    Never rinse your mouth after you have brushed your teeth. Only spit out the excess toothpaste.
    Floss your teeth before brushing your teeth every day.

  5. Teeth
    Teeths are the first part of digest system . It is where the food gets broken down. It is very important to keep them healthy or you might have to take them out but it is different when you get them out when it is the right time. You have two type of teeth ,your baby teeth and your adult teeth. Your baby teeth are the teeth from when you were a baby. If you get your baby teeth pulled out it is not as bad because the adult teeth will gust grow and fill in the gap but if you get you adult teeth pulled out you will get a sliver teeth or a fake teeth.
    What make your teeth rotten the most? Things that make them rot are candy, fizzy drinks, sugar (especially brown sugar), sweets and many more things that can make you teeth rot but you can eat a little bit but not a whole lot. If you eat too many sweets ,your teeth will decay (break).Some people get their teeth pulled because of teeth decay and was going to get in to the gum and you will get teeth pain.
    To prevent this you need to brush your teeth two times a day, eat less sugar things, don’t eat sweet things after dinner or after you have brushed your teeth ,see your dentist if you have any teeth pain and drink milk two times a day. So hope you know what thing can keep your teeth healthy and what rotten your teeth. KEEP YOUR TEETH HEATHLY!

  6. Teeth
    *******

    Your teeth are very important because everything that you eat has to go through your mouth. Humans have three types of teeth, canines are the best for tearing through food such as meat; incisors are good at snipping through food and finally molars and pre-molars are the best for grinding and crushing food.

    There are many different ways to look after your teeth such as going to the dentist every 4-5 months and brushing your teeth twice a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You should go to dentist regularly because then he or she can see if you have got plaque or something bad in your teeth. Plaque is caused by bacteria after you have eaten. You have to brush your teeth because it removes plaque and bits of food that bacteria feed on. You should use toothpaste when you brush your teeth because it contains fluoride which strengthens your teeth.

    If you use mouthwash and floss your teeth after you brush, it will make your teeth even cleaner and will keep your gums free from the plaque.

    But remember to keep your teeth clean and healthy because you only have two sets of teeth. Be careful what you do with your teeth.

  7. Teeth decay and how to look after them.

    Tooth decay is the result of an infection with certain types of bacteria that use sugars in food to make acids. Over time, these acids can make a cavity in the tooth. If the tooth decay process continues, more minerals are lost. Over time, the enamel is weakened and destroyed, forming a cavity. When we have cavity a dentist has to repair the tooth with a filling.
    To prevent cavity, we shouldn't eat a lot of sugar ( lollies, chocolate, sweets...) and we should avoid coke and sweet drinks.
    We also should brush our teeth in the morning and before bed. We should drink lots of water and we should eat vegetables and fruits ( not a lot because they have acid).

  8. HOW PEOPLE ROT THEIR TEETH!

    This is how some people rot their teeth:
    • By eating too much sugar
    • Not brushing their teeth regularly
    • Not seeing the dentist regularly.
    By doing those things that makes it more likely to have decay. Decay happens when we don’t brush our teeth then the bacterial will form around the gum line called plaque. Over time a hole in the middle will form bigger and bigger (the hole is called cavity), it past the enamel to the dentine then the pulp. The bigger the hole is the more painful it is. The plaque uses the food we eat and the drink we drink to make acid. The plaque will attack the enamel.

    To look after your teeth we should: eat healthily, brush your teeth with a medium soft brush, cut down on sugar, use dental floss, rince your mouth after eating sticky food, use fluoride tooth paste and visit the dentist regularly. •

  9. Tooth decay is bad for your teeth. What happens during tooth decay is firstly, the bacteria that comes from when we eat, sticks to our teeth. The plaque forms into the gum line and uses the food and drinks we have to make acid. Then, the acid goes into enamel and dentine, which is the outer- layers of the tooth. Finally, a hole in the tooth can be called a cavity.

    To look after your teeth you must not eat a lot of sugary foods and drinks. Also you must not drink fizzy drinks. If you don’t brush your teeth your teeth will rot. You must eat healthy food. Make sure you brush all of your teeth not just one tooth. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables but not too much fruit because it has sugar in them. Take time brushing your teeth.

  10. Teeth are a fascinating part of your body and are also vital for the body. If you didn’t have teeth you would not be able to eat. Teeth break down the food with saliva from the salivary glands so that it is easy to swallow and this is where the journey of digestion begins.

    20 milk teeth start to appear at the age of 6 months and take around 4-5 years to grow fully. When you are approximately six years old, gradually 32 adult teeth start to grow and push the old ones out. A wisdom tooth is very handy because it is an extra chewing molar; you grow it in your teenage years but sometimes it never appears. You have 6 pairs of molars and they are at the back of your mouth, their function is grinding and chewing the food. The pre-molars have the same function as the molars but you have 4 pairs of pre-molars and they are in front of your molars. Canines are at the side of your mouth and are sharp for cutting meat. You have 8 incisors in total and they are for biting off the food.

    The Crown of the tooth is above the gum and includes the surface, the enamel and part of the dentine layer. The Root contains the gum and it also includes nerves, the pulpy core and the root canal. The surface of your tooth contains phosphate and calcium which help repair small damage in your teeth. The Enamel is under the surface of the tooth and is the strongest substance in the body. The gum is the pink surface where your teeth slot into, and is the subsequent layer.

    The main cause of rotting teeth is sugar and fizzy drinks. If you don’t brush your teeth, plaque forms. It is also a cause of tooth decay and is a layer of food particles which can destroy enamel. Bacteria feed on the food in the layer of plaque and produce an acid which causes the enamel to erode and the teeth to rot. Acidic foods (E.g. citrus fruits) also affect your teeth because the acid can wear away the enamel. The moment you put a sugary thing in your mouth the bacteria breaks down the sugar. Next it creates an acid which removes calcium and phosphate. If the plaque does not contain sugar then the calcium and phosphate can combine with your saliva and repair the damage of your teeth.

    To keep your teeth hygienic and infection free you should eat healthy foods such as fruits, veg, milk and water. Another way to keep them clean is to cut down on sugar. Try to eat low sugared foods between meals as well as cutting down on sugar. If you can then you should visit a dentist regularly. Brushing is regularly needed (at least twice a day). Toothpaste should be applied on a toothbrush and scrubbed on teeth for a few minutes. Always use fluoride toothpaste because it makes teeth harder and tougher. So always brush your teeth with toothpaste (TIP: use sensodyne classics because I have done a successful experiment and the result was sensodyne classics won the experiment).

  11. Teeth are one of the most important part of our body because without teeth we would not be able to eat and talk properly.
    How do teeth decay:
    Our teeth decay by eating too much sugary foods such as sweets. Each time we eat sugary food it is broken down by the bacteria found in the sticky film called plaque to make acid. This acid attacks outer layer (enamel and dentine) of the teeth and removes the minerals calcium and phosphate leading to tooth decay. Over time, a small hole known as cavity develops on the tooth surface.
    Once cavities are formed in the enamel, the plaque and bacteria can reach the dentine. As the dentine is softer than enamel, the process of decay speeds up. Erosion is faster. Without treatment the plaque and bacteria will enter the pulp as the nerves will be exposed to the bacteria making it very painful.
    How to look after you teeth:
    The tooth decay can be prevented by cutting down on sugar. Without sugar in you mouth the calcium and phosphate along with saliva can repair the small amount of damage in the teeth. Fluoride also helps in the tooth repair. Between our meals as in snacks we should eat foods with low sugar such as fruits, raw vegetables,crumpets, bread sticks, sandwiches, milk and water.
    It is very important to brush teeth twice a day (after breakfast and before bed time). It is very important to brush before bed as bacteria get a lot of time to cause damage.
    Brush all teeth not just the front ones but also at the sides and back of the teeth.
    Spend at least 2 minutes each time you brush. Always use toothbrushes with a small head and soft bristles and don't forget to change it every 3 months.
    Finally, try to say – “Freddie's friend Flan flies flags” without bottom lip touching the top teeth.

  12. How teeth decay and how you protect them
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Decay
    Juice, fizzy drinks, chocolate, and most commonly sugar, these things might make you hungry and thirsty, but don’t drink them too much otherwise your teeth are NOT going to be happy especially if you drink fruit juices. These juices are confirmed that they will give you plaque and your teeth will puff a lot and get lots bubbles on them. Even if you drink such drinks and don’t brush them you’ll get holes in them AHHHH! This all happens because all the sticky substances make your teeth stink. For example: if you leave a glass of orange juice for few days you might go and check it and it might stink a lot.

    Protection
    You should know by now that if you brush your teeth properly or you’ll get holes in them remember! Most toothpastes has a thing in them called fluoride in them which protects your teeth so you can brush your teeth nicely.

  13. Teeth
    ~~~~~
    Our teeth are the strongest part of the body.The strongest part of the tooth is the enamal shield.There are three main parts
    of the tooth which are called:
    *Enamal (Outer)
    *Dentin (middle)
    *Pulp Chamber (inner)
    How Teeth Decay:
    ________________
    Teeth decay because of formation of cavities (germs,sugar)
    Firstly, when you eat the sugary food it combines with the germs in your mouth and lands on a tooth. It will stick to the
    tooth surface with the help of the sugary stuff we eat.....Next it slowly starts eating the tooth creating a hole called a
    cavity. At first it won't hurt when the cavity is small.Then if you don't show your teeth to the dentist the cavity will
    become even BIGGEEERRR REACHING THE DENTIN but still it won't hurt a lot.Just a little tingling when eating ice cream.
    DANGER ZONE!!! Now it will become SOO BBBBIIIIGGGG that it reaches the pulp chamber!The pulp chamber is where all the veins
    and nerves is in the tooth are.IF IT REACHES HERE IT WILL CAUSE MASSIVE PAIN!!!!!! And then we will have to go to the dentist
    to extract the tooth or perform a root canal treatment.
    How To Prevent Tooth Decay:
    ***************************
    To prevent tooth decay you need a brush your tooth twice a day. You need to brush the teeth properly. Scrub your paste on the
    front surface on the incisors and canines.Then, brush the back side.Now, do the same with your molars and pre - molars(also
    wisdom tooth).As you have finished that, brush the eating/grinding surfaces to take all the sugar of which you have
    eaten.This process should take you about 2 - 4 minutes.Flossing should also be done that we are now the age to do that.DOD
    YOY KNOW!THAT AS SOON AS YOU HAVE GO YOUR FIRSTTOOTH YOU HAVE TO BRUSH!!!
    Also eating more fruits and vegetables is essential.
    Cut down on biscuits,cakes,crisps,fizzy drinks and chocolates.Water should be your main drink.
    Rinse your mouth with water after every meal.
    Regards,
    Krish
  14. How to look after your teeth :
    Looking after your teeth can seem very hard even if it's as simple as simple can be. All you need is a toothbrush depending on your age and a tube of toothpaste again depending on your age. Another tip is to eat mostly healthy foods and the odd sugary items. As long as you brush your teeth every day and night (some people brush at midday to) your teeth will stay healthy. Some foods and drink that rot your teeth are Coke,Fanta,Sparkling lemonade,cake,chocolate e.t.c. Even though it's hard to resist and not eating large amounts of these 'junk foods' it's always best to try to avoid these foods. As long as you do your teeth will stay fairly healthy and you'll have them white which makes your teeth shimmer in a lovely toothy smile. Remember these are just some tips,there are many more to find.
    What and how things rot your teeth :
    Well well your teeth rot a lot more than staying white. You must have noticed that most people have fillings,silver teeth and broken teeth. All these negative effects are caused by gum disease,tooth decay and plaque. You should already know what gum disease and tooth decay is and just for your knowledge plaque is when sugar in foods is turned into acid by non-helpful germs,that acid forms a layer called plaque which can rot your teeth. Even though sugar can rot your enamel (outer layer of teeth) it also is the cause of diabetes. Do you know your adult teeth push out your baby teeth when growing and never grow back if you lose them. Tooth decay can be extremely painful and you might have to have your teeth taken out to calm and sooth the pain.
    In this picture I can see different types of Egyptian vehicles, a few hieroglyphs and a man with an arrow. I think that the man with the arrow is going hunting to get food, the people in the vehicles might be going to work or maybe having a race. We still use horses but only for fun, we don't usually use then to move vehicles. I think it was painted to bring a message or something.
  16. Teeth decay caused by eating sweets for example like chocolate and candy,another reason is not brushing your teeth and smoking.Your teeth colour changes to yellow because of the reason which i wrote.If you eat junk food and chocolate or candy your stomach will hurt and your teeth may fall early,that's why you need to brush your teeth everyday.In a day you should brush your teeth 3 times a day, that's how you take care of your teeth.
