PERSUASION IS ALL AROUND YOU

We are starting a new writing topic on persuasion.  You might be surprised at how many people and businesses are trying to convince you to do things every day. You only have to watch commercials, read the paper, look at the ads in your magazines, or read the billboards as you’re driving home to see that persuasion is all around you.

Your homework is to find a persuasive piece to bring to or share about in class. It can be an article in the newspaper, a letter to the editor, a movie or book review, a commercial, or an advertisement in a magazine or newspaper. Once you have found your persuasive piece, answer the questions below.

1. Where did you find your persuasive example?

2. Who is trying to persuade you?

3. What are they trying to persuade you to do?

4. How do they try to persuade you?

      5. Do you think their argument is convincing? Why or why not?

  1. I found the persuasive example in the magazine section of Tesco.
The magazine company are trying to persuade me.
They are trying to persuade me to buy the magazine.
They are trying to persuade me to buy the magazine by giving away a free Thunderbirds toy on the front cover of the magazine.
I think their argument is convincing because it makes children who are big fans of Thunderbirds want to buy the magazine to get the toy to start their collection. I know it is convincing because I have bought this and another of the magazines.

  2. Dear Sir,
May I use your letters page to plead with your readers on behalf of a group of people
who cannot plead for themselves? I refer to the thousands — maybe millions — of
child workers who live and die among us every day!
These children labour for long hours in the fields and factories, mines and mills of
our great nation. They work in our cities as match-girls and chimney sweeps. Pov-
erty-stricken, ragged, hungry and exhausted, children as young as four years old
strive to keep their families from starvation. Their wages are small, and the work is
dangerous — many are killed or maimed as they carry out their tasks. Cruel overse-
ers beat them if they pause for a moment in their labours. Oh, Gentle Readers, how
can we — a civilised nation — allow this abuse to go on?

Consider the case of Hetty Groves . She is nine years old and works in a brickyard from five o’clock each morning until eight at night. Her only break is at midday, to eat the few scraps she brings for dinner. All year round she works, sweltering in the summer heat, shivering in the winter cold. Her task is monotonous and back-breaking, but worse is to come. When Hetty is 12 years of age, she’ll be considered strong enough to haul heavy loads of clay into the yard. The clay will be made into bricks, which she’ll then carry to the delivery carts — about 35 tons of clay and bricks a day! And there is no escape from her labour — Hetty will never have an education, never be free to choose a better life.People of Great Britain, surely you agree that all god-fearing people should care about the plight of these little ones? Help today — now! — by asking your Member of Parliament to support Lord Ashley’s ‘Ten Hour Bill’.

This would ban the employment of children under nine years old, and ensure shorter working hours for older boys and girls. Support your local branch of the Ragged School Union, to provide the basic education that will help children out of poverty. Campaign for better housing and fairer working conditions for all the poor. End this cruelty, Gentle Readers, and create a world free of child employment!
    Yours sincerely,
    Mr James Samuels

    2. I found my example on the internet. In this case a person called Mr. James samuels is trying to persuade me.They are trying to make me help Victorian children who work in factories, mines etc. They are using flattery, describing how badly the Victorian children are treated, using powerful persuasive verbs and saying how we could do such a ghastly thing.I think their argument is convincing although I can't do anything about it. I think it is convincing because it has all the features a persuasive text needs.

      Regards Chanakya

  3. Pizza for school lunch
    I found this piece online.
A child from a school is trying to convince a head teacher.
They are trying to make a head teacher make pizza a everyday meal.
They are persuading them by saying that many children like pizza and there are many types of pizza they can make.
I think it is half convincing half not because firstly at the start it is convincing but then in the middle it says that pizza is junk food and so people lose interest in listening.

  4. I found my piece on Google.
Animal Rescue League tried to persuade me to adopt an animal from a pound .
They are telling us that we will feel good helping and rescuing abounded animals. They are also saying that if we are not adopting them they might be put to sleep and if we like to have a pet is cheaper to buy from a pound then from fancy pet store.
The argument they are using is very persuasive, because they are using emotive language e.g ( animals can be good companions, dogs are wonderful source of protection).... They are playing with our feelings.

  5. Where did you find your persuasive example? I found my persuasive example in the Sunday Mail newspaper.
Who is trying to persuade you? DFS, a popular, large sofa company with many stores.
What are they trying to persuade you to do? They are trying to persuade me to purchase a sofa.
How do they try to persuade you? They try to persuade me by writing the text in an exiting form so I would buy it.
Do you think that the argument is convincing? Why or why not? Yes because it is telling me about it and looking at the picture you can see how great it is .Also have changed the price to half price.

  6. I found this on a newspaper. It is an M&S (Marks & Spencer) 50% off advertisement. The people who work at M&S are trying to persuade me to come and buy their stuff for cheaper than normal. They are trying to make came to the shop and buy things from there. The ways they are trying to persuade me is by having 50% off so I could came and buy things and get it for half price. Their augment is convincing me because 50% is half price and there might be dress for 20 pounds you would get for 10 pounds and I think that is a good deal.

The Doritos chips company is trying to persuade me every day.
They are trying to persuade me to eat and buy Doritos.
They try to say to me that Doritos make you as strong as a sumo.
I don’t think its convincing because Doritos might sound like it but actually it can’t make you so strong. I still like Doritos though. 

  10. Persuasion is all around you / the eat well plate

    1. Where did you find your persuasive example?
I found this piece of persuasive article on the NHS website called The Eat Well Plate.
    2. Who is trying to persuade you?
National Health Services (NHS) is trying to persuade me.
    3. What are they trying to persuade you to do?
NHS is persuading us to eat healthily.
    4. How do they try to persuade you?
They try to persuade me by giving a little bit of information and giving a lot of good examples of what to eat healthily. They also put a pie chart on the article that shows how much we have to eat on each type of food for example a big portion of fruit and vegetable, starchy food, some dairy food, soft drinks and non-dairy food.
    5. Do you think their argument is convincing? Why or why not?
I think it is convincing because it tells some facts like most adults are overweight or obese due to eating to much. This means most people are eating more than what they need to, and should eat and drink fewer calories to lose weight.

1)I found my persuasive example in the 'Primary times' magazine.

2)The JRC festive buffet is trying to persuade everyone to go and eat their yummy food at their restaurant this Christmas.

3)They are trying to persuade everyone to bring your family, friends or colleagues to their buffet to eat their food.

4)They are trying to persuade me by showing a massive picture at the bottom of the page which makes me look at it first because in it there is a boy who is holding a Christmas present. Above it there is a picture of the restaurant which looks fabulous and bright, underneath the picture is an article about the restaurant which is really interesting.

5)I think the text is convincing because they describe a larger variety of food which allows people to taste different foods from around the world.

  12. Persuasive argument about Environment By Planet earth series.
    ***************************************************
I found my persuasive piece in the series of planet earth and the programme was showing how over the period of time the climate has changed and how the humans have lead to it. They were trying to persuade me to prevent climate change by switching of the electricity devices when you do not use them ,try to walk and go on your bicycle as much as you can, eat healthy , reduce your waste and you should recycle and reuse wherever possible.
They tried to persuade me by showing me what happens to the animals ( how some species have been extinct )and some are in danger and the climate is changing (it's getting hotter).
I think that their argument was convincing because you would not want the earth to stay like that in the future and be really hot.

  14. Persuasion
    ------------------
From my experience in the outside world, I have been watching advertisements, reading billboards, newspapers and magazines. I have seen many different types of persuasion in my life such as, happy persuasion (sale is on! Persuading to buy), curious persuasion (movie trailers) and sympathetic persuasion (save the children, water aid persuading you to donate). There is one type of persuasion which really impressed me. Many people are trying to convince you to save the environment and make Earth a hygienic and sustainable place. The people advertising actually convinced me to recycle, save water, paper and trees so Earth will be a better place to live.

1.Where did you find your persuasive example?
I found saving the environment mainly on television and on billboards at bus stops, high street and tube and tube stations.

    2. Who is trying to persuade you?
The environmentalists, government and the council are persuading me to save the environment.

    3. What are they trying to persuade you to do?
They are persuading us to save the environment by showing us different advertisements.
    • Bin it your way is exciting, fun and interesting
    • Green Bombay as well as clean Bombay rhymes so children will like it
    • Re-use bags and a 5p bag charge because plastic takes longer to degrade and adds to our waste collection
    • Petrol and carbon monoxide are polluting mother Earth
    • Save paper and trees
    • Save electricity and water

    4. How do they try to persuade you?
They show many places where the environment is bad and persuade you. See my Images and tell me if you are convinced

    5. Do you think their argument is convincing?
    Yes it is

    6. Why or why not?
It is, because they use interesting, positive and fun ways to persuade you and they show you the consequence of not saving the planet.
