Angus’s Diary of a Tudor Sailor
It is 1578 aboard the Golden Hind. Today is the 17th October. It is night and we’re still sailing. It is strange, we don’t usually sail at night. I have noticed that Captain Drake seems slightly bothered lately. Maybe it’s because he suspects we’re being chased by the Spanish (spit spit spit).
Life aboard ship is hard. I have no idea where we are although rumours say we just sailed round the tip of a place called Emerica.
Earlier today I was firmly told by Captain Drake to go up to the crows nest. Then he told me in a hoarse whisper to watch out for the Spanish ships. I can’t believe how much you get rocked about up there. I felt quite sick after 10 minutes I came down the rigging and was bled arrgh that hurt.
Later I was asked to help with an amputation. I do not like helping out with amputations. I was asked to hold down the unlucky person about to become an amputee!

    Dear diary,

Today me and my ship crew are going to the Caribbean. I feel nervous because this is my first time going somewhere far and because we will be sailing in the middle of the deep blue sea.

We have already set sail; the smell is disgusting. It smells like the sewers and rotten fish! We have a new captain to sail the ship, his name is James Davies. I hope he is good at sailing!

I will take over the greasy, old, rusty, big wheel in an hour, so Captain James can have a long rest. I hope he doesn’t snore! We only have 3 beds and there are 5 people on the boat. This means 3 people can sleep in the comfy, soft and clean bed, 1 person has to sleep on the hard, cold and dusty floor, while the other one is sailing the ship.

Under the deck is the hull (under the floor), this has the food and the clothes. This is also where we cook our food and sleep. Near our beds we have chests with our belongings in it.

    AT NIGHT:

Tonight I am sleeping on the floor! I can’t sleep because I can hear the big waves crashing against the boat. I AM TERRIFIED! Peter is at the wheel, I think I should go and see if it is okay. While I was walking to the deck, threw the large window I saw it started to pour with rain. I heard loud thunder clap, so I decided to sprint back to bed. Finally I fell back to sleep and had a nice dream.

  2. On the golden hind I felt seasick, cold and was shivering. It felt so cold it felt like I in ice water even though I was on the ship.My crew and I were in the middle of a thunder storm, the wind was howling, hail stones were beating down on us like bullets, the lightning lit up the sky, the thunder crashed above our heads and the the waves were beating on the side of the ship making us tumble and turn through the storm as we tried to cross the pacific to get home.

Scurvy had taken over most of my crew because our fresh food had ran out over a month ago. There gums were bleeding, wounds were reopening and there was a smell of rotten flesh. The smell was so bad it made me through.Maggots were everywhere and their smell way horrific. Whatever we tried we couldn’t fight the disease.

All around me I could hear sailors crying for help from seasickness and immense suffering from malnutrition ,starvation and dehydration.I could hear the boat creak as I tried to manoeuvre it through the crashing waves. The howling wind was telling me to turn back but if we did that I knew we wouldn’t survive so we had to keep going.

  4. Dear Diary,

It was the night of 1578. My first night aboard the Golden Hind. The night aboard the ship was terrible. Captain drake has been slightly bothered about something. I’m guessing it’s the spanish seen as just now he had sent me up to the crow's nest to see if the spanish had been in sight. I hate it up there in the crow's nest. There had been a storm even now it's there. The seas where rocking me everywhere in the crow's nest. Ten minutes later I had been rushing down stairs I had been sick. About two minutes ago I had been sent back to my cabin by doctor Faustus. I’m a bit better now but not completely recovered. I had reread the rules on aboard the ship this morning they were terrible: if you stole food from the food barrer then your hand would get nailed to the mast, if it won't heal then your hand would get chopped of by the doctor. Also if you used god's name incorrectly the your tongue would get nailed to the mast. I saw someone stealing today I was about to tell but I was sent up to the crows nest. I have no idea where we are I asked captain drake he kept on saying that he’ll tell me later, I just asked he finally gave me an answer: “We've sailed around the corner of somewhere called America” replied captain drake. I’m going to tell captain drake about someone stealing I think it was the new guy not sure about his name.

  5. Dear diary ,
I'm on a boat with my friends and I came on the boat in Wednesday 23rd August 1490 . It is now Saturday 25th August 1491 and I am freezing , it is
-25 degrees and my friends can't handle it either . Above that , we have wooden rooms so it is even more cold . We've been fishing and there has been a lot of storms . Luckily , our rooms have not collapsed because we made it out of the strongest and sturdiest wood . Sadly , we've been badly injured and luckily we've not broken any parts of our body but we have scars and blood dripping down our legs . It did smell of rotten eggs and we did hear some weird cracking noises while we were sleeping but other than hurting ourselves and hearing weird noises but it was worth the tasty food .

  6. Olivier's Diary of a Tudor Sailor

It is 1497 aboard The Matthew. Today is the 27th August. It is evening and we are still sailing. I can see very powerful waves. I think there will be storm soon. I don't like stormy weather, because I am scared, we are going to sink. It's almost dinner time, and I can already smell burnt food, probably because the cook fell asleep. I can hear Captain John Cabot telling the cook to wake up and look after the food, because we don't have any more food to waste. Later on, after dinner the storm was very bad and I felt sea sick. I still helped other sailors, even though I was sea sick.

  7. Today, 21/12/1521, I got on a wooden brown ship with a pile of fishes which smelt like a rotten egg. These days the boats are all dangerous and daring to be sailed on because there is no policing at sea. When it was lunch we had salted beef, nuts and biscuits. The biscuits are really hard that could break the teeth. The beef is smoky and covered in salt. I never ate fresh food as they couldn’t cook or keep things because they would just turn all rotten and lose vitamin. I am frightened that some people have said that if I don’t eat vitamins I would lead to a disease such as scurvy which means teeth falling out and getting lots of pain! After lunch we split into different groups called watches. Today my group has been tasked to keep watch for storms, enemies and land. This is the most stressful job on the ship because we have to keep alert of enemies and danger.
I felt very helpless and sad that I have gone without my family and the clothes we wear are all dirty. After all the hard work my crew laid on the deck and rested. The decks of where we sleep are stinky and rusty. The mice are what I get quite frustrated about. But at least I had a cat to chase them. They run all over the place. The only sounds I hear are squeaks, chatting and splashing

  8. Dear Diary,
It was the morning, I heard very loud snoring and I mean very loud snoring. So I woke up really tired. I smelt disgusting because I had been on this ship for several years. I felt like I needed a showers. So I felt smelly and sad because I can’t be clean for once. The sea was so blue. I felt like I wanted to swim in it. It was an old ship, so the ship was broken. So when I stepped on the deck I could hear creaks from the floor. The ship smelt disgusting because people had to do their business, so that was definitely not good

It's another day on the White Mermaid, we have just come back from Indonesia collecting nutmeg. We have been in this ship for 6 years collecting spices for my friends, foes and family back in Britain. Queen Elizabeth is getting very greedy these days for spices because they are very nice. Life aboard ship is hard. I felt quite sick after my first dinner aboard the ship, but now I've been doing it for 12 years so i'm used to feeling that.

  10. It is 1579 aboard the Golden hind . Today is the 18th September. It is morning and we are still sailing . I am having breakfast and all we have is either beer or some biscuits. Those foods don't have vitamins. If you don't have enough vitamins you can get an illness called scurvy. When you have scurvy black and blue spots appear on your skin and your gums bleed. Finally your teeth fall out
and then you can die. Normally half of your crew would die because of scurvy or other diseases.
I don't really like it on the ship because the Spanish can attack and you might feel lonely.
On the sea it smelt quite salty and it felt damp. On the sea I could hear some seagulls the splashes of the big waves and the flapping of the sails.

  11. Dear dairy, Monday 4th May 1567
It a nether day aboard the golden hind .It’s everyone’s tenth day at sea, I’m already getting tired of the horrible smell of rotten fruit and fish. I can’t believe that I agreed to do this; I miss my family so much, I don’t know how long I can do this for now. There don’t give us fresh food therefore, it made my stomach hurt. However, I overheard the captain saying to one of the sailors we might be landing in a week or two. I feel like a part of me has been taken away but this has been my dream. I hear canon fire and waves ever night, so it’s hard to sleep.
On the other hand, my back pain has been going away and I have made lots of friends but I still miss my friend back at home. I wish I could see them but I’m hundreds of miles away from home. Sadly, captain duke has fallen sick, again. Hopefully, he get well soon so he can take us home safely

  12. Dear Diary,
    18th October 1578
Life on a ship is very hard. All we have to eat is porridge and biscuits. Every day I look overboard into the deep dark blue sea and watch other sailors vomiting, the smell is horrendous. We all get very sick because we don’t have any fresh fruit and vegetables. We have been at sea now for one year. I miss my family but at least I am out here with my best friends.
Our ship is powered by people rowing and power from the wind as it hits the sails. Last night I was woken by a violent storm. The waves crashed against the side of the ship. The lightening was as bright as a comet in the black velvet sky. I was absolutely petrified but I got through it.

  13. Chanakya's diary of a Tudor sailor

    Dear diary,

It is the 4th of June 1519 and I am on the Mary Rose, our fine emperor Henry the VIII named it after his sister Mary Tudor in 1510. It is noon and the king's pride and joy is still sailing. Captain
Grenville seems slightly troubled lately, according to the rumours the attack from the Spanish fleet had given him permanent limb injuries and we can't know for certain as he is locked n his office all of the time. I can anticipate this has disturbed him as we have been unbeaten in our other naval battles : the French battle and the German battle. From the lower deck kitchens all I can smell is the cooking rum, all I can see is ocean and sky and most of the noise is my crew mates singing the sea shanty : “ "The anchor came to the bow with the chanty of 'Oh ,” etc . Slowly I amble down the staircase and into the kitchens in which I can see a hole in the poop deck through which the food is passed around.

As I gazed out of the window, I saw a large amount of brown dots in the distance, as they neared I realised they were a large fleet of naval ships with the Spanish flag. I'm speechless as I hear cannon fire, this is probably the last time I’m writing to you, and by that I mean forever!!!

    Regards,
    Chanakya

  14. Dear diary

It is 1502 in the 16th century aboard the Sovereign. It's dawn and we have a long way to go.Our voyage is meant for spice trading and believe it or not, we've got around 20-30 bags of spice on our ship. The smell is very stinky all over the ship. Our supper is usually stolen by rats. This ship is equipped with cannons for protection.

Along our journey I could see many things such as sharks, whales and flying fish.I also heard some of my crew mates telling stories about terrible sea - monsters. If you were a sailor you would hear random old fake stories and the waves crashing the wooden ship.Captain Sinkawinkadink told me to cook lunch.Cooking lunch is one of the worst thing to do so I quit it and climbed to the lookout tower. When there is a attack you might have to abandon ship so far of the coast you could die!

    Regards,

  15. Today we had to move to a new land, and it was my first time on a ship. So, I got some food, wore clothes and the ship was launched. The second it was launched I felt a sudden stab of nervousness and excitement. I was going to send some food to the poor in other countries, so I said “goodbye” to my friends and sailed away. There were butterflies in my stomach for the first 5 minutes.
During the journey, some people fell sick and some even caught a disease called scurvy which made their teeth fall out and give them lots of sores but I am lucky I didn’t get that. The first time we had to eat I was stunned… the food was infested by other insects, rats and all sorts of things like that and we had to eat it else we’ll be hungry so I ate it but it was a bit cooked which kind of made it better. The worst part of the ship was when mice started invading our food, the cooking and crawling up on us, which was most terrible. It was all cramped over there, there were about 100 sailors too on a 50 meters ship! So, you could barely move at least a few steps. Everyone on the ship smelt like fish because nobody had chance to bathe for weeks. Sailors worked so hard for long hours that the only sound they could hear most of the time was of the captain shouting instructions for the sailors and splashing of water.
After a few months we finally got to the new continent, Africa and delivered many crops and other vegetables. After of that, we went back to the ship for another 6 months and sailed back home.

  16. 21st May, 1521

Dear Diary, I am now the pilot of the Mary Rose owned by my king Henry VIII. It is my first trip and I am very nervous. It is a grand ship and very durable. It’s dusk on a clear spring day and I am awake sailing the ship. We have been sailing for around 15 days now. Our course is set to a place called Morrocoo (Morocco) from Brighton. We need to trade for spices and food because we are going to run out of food soon. Speaking of food, I need my dinner so I am heading down to the main kitchen. I can smell raw fish and meat. Sadly, the cook says that there was only fish and biscuits left. The kitchen is also very smoky and humid. In a matter of minutes, I can smell smoked salmon which is strange. It smells of smoked salmon because they seem to be smoking the fish in the box above the large cauldron. After I retrieve my smoked salmon and biscuit dinner, I am now back to steer the ship again. I had to go through the sleeping soldiers in the bow of the ship to get back to my cabin. A few of our 185 soldiers have scurvy but our surgeons are handling it well. The soldiers are fit but are not getting much sleep either.

Life aboard a ship is extremely difficult. I can hear and see the heavy rain thrashing onto the deck and rocking the ship severely. Thankfully, the carpenter is very experienced and is doing a decent job. I regularly need to use my astrolabe to measure the sun’s angle with the horizon. Pilots need it to know the location of the ship. Currently we are in these coordinates (48°23′27″N / 4°29′08″E/ 48.39083°N / 4.48556°E). The captain told me to go up into the crow’s nest. I had to check for land but instead I saw the French fleet. I felt scared and alerted the crew to wake up and be ready. They attacked…

The fleet was completely shredded and we have re-routed our course to Portugal because we are very tired after the war. We stopped for a night and got some fresh champagne. We set off again onto the Atlantic Ocean. I have used my astrolabe and it tells me we are around 7 miles away. I can see the land up from the crow’s nest. The only problem is that it will take 7hrs because the tide is low. We’ve decided to have a party on the ship. I shook the champagne bottle and boom!!!!! It went absolutely everywhere!!!!! Finally, we have arrived at our destination. I have also gained my Worthy Pilot badge which is pleasing. We trade our 5000kg of pure silk for 10000kg of a wide variety of different spices and chillies. Tomorrow is another day and let’s see what it throws at me.

    Goodnight Diary,
    Om
