Is learning to swim important?

Almost half of children leaving primary school can't swim well enough according to a report by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA).

The ASA say that children should be able to swim the National Curriculum standard of 25 metres without any help before they reach secondary school.

But many schools say that getting you guys to the baths and back again without taking up too much of the school day is a real struggle.

We are lucky enough to have swimming lessons at school.  Not all children learn to swim at school.  Do you think it is important?  Write a balance argument giving reasons for and against.   You could use the following headings:

-Introduction
- Why it is important to learn to swim.
- Why learning to swim at school may not be a good idea.
- Conclusion

I think swimming is a great sport because it is a great talent and keeps you fit . And if your in danger in the water , swimming is a good way to get out of danger . We should all learn swimming because you use all parts of your body [ arms , legs and head ] and it is good for your muscles . Swimming is a good idea because it is a good thing to do in your spear time and one of the healthiest sports in the world . But sometimes water can put you in trouble .

Today we are going to see weather or not schools should organize swimming lessons or not.

    Yes:
    *****
It is a good way to exerscise all the muscles in your body and if you fall into a water sorce you know you wont drown.

    No:
    ***
If your scared of water you will just have to sit on the side and watch the other kids plus if you live no where near any pools or the sea then you wont be able to use what you have learnt.

considering the argument from both sides we have decided that we will keep the idea of swimming lessons as it is one of the most famous sports in the world.

  4. Is learning to swim important?

Swimming is an exercise for kids and adults. It is a lifetime activity. There are many benefits of knowing how to swim because:
    1. It is good for your health
Swimming is a whole body exercise because it involves your arms, legs, waist, neck and head. When you swim you push, pull, kick and move around.
    2. We can save people who have drowned
According to the report from USA 88% of drowning reduced because more and more people are learning to swim. By mastering swimming you may save a life.
    3. Swimming helps kids learn better
The researchers have found that the kids who are learning swimming will help them learn faster in the classroom compare to the non-swimmer.
    4. Swimming as an individual or team sport
Once you have mastered swimming you may have a chance to take part in the Olympic Games.
    5. Swimming is fun for families
Because any ages are allowed to swim for example babies and elderlies therefore the whole families can go to swimming together so they can relax and have fun.

With all the reasons above, I think learning to swim at school is a good idea and important. I wish our swimming lessons at school continues, even though it will end soon.

  5. I think it is important to learn how to swim because swimming is a life-saving sport as well as being the top sport which keeps you fit and healthy. It is important to learn how to swim so you can save yourself in case you accidently slip into a pool. Swimming is a superpower that saves you from drowning.

It is a good idea to go swimming at school as it gives us a special opportunity to boost our swimming skills to the maximum level on top of doing it only just on the weekends. This makes it easier for our regular swimming class. I like swimming at school as I get to play with my friends and it is fun! On the other hand, it is not such a good idea to swim at school as it takes up our work time of school, which could be utilised for more learning.

Conclusion: I believe swimming is a very invigorating sport with which one can have a healthy lifestyle as swimming relaxes the body and mind. Also, if someone can’t swim they will miss out on loads of fun water sports such as surfing, water polo , water-skiing , jet skiing , scuba diving , underwater football, underwater hockey , underwater ice hockey, underwater rugby, boating, board racing , canoeing , kayaking, rowing , rafting, sailing and many more. So, that is why everyone must learn how to swim so that they can save themselves and others if needed in desperate times. Also, swimming is an exhilarating sport and loads of fun!

  6. Swimming
Lots of children who leave primary school leave without learning how to swim. But is it important to learn how to swim in school at primary school. There have been many arguments between head teachers and teachers if they should let the children in the school go swimming. So should they.
Learning to swim is an important sport because it is a life saving skill. If you don’t know how to swim and you fall into water you will drown. But if you know how to swim you can save other people as well as yourself. Swimming is an enjoyable activity and can build up your body strength, heart strength and muscles. Many doctors say that learning to swim is really healthy because it helps you use different types of muscles. On a hot summers day having a dip in the pool can help you feel relaxed and physically fit.
On the other hand, the swimming coaches and teachers could have too many children to teach and they could focus on the child who is not the best at swimming and someone else could be in trouble and probably drown because the coach wasn’t taking care of everyone. The swimming lessons could also take too much time and the children could need to go to the toilet and get wrinkles on their hands. It is a bad idea because you would take lessons once a week so it would take a long time to learn swimming.
From the discussion from both sides we have finally decided that everyone should go swimming and the children at primary school should go swimming at or from school so just in case they drown they can save them self.

  7. Is learning to swim in school important?
    ------------------------------------------------------

    Introduction:
    ----------------
A life skill is a necessary and useful skill to make the most out of your life. It also makes a better quality life. Examples of life skills are: speaking various languages, the 5 senses, first aid, cooking, learning, cycling, tying your shoe laces, washing-up, hygiene and martial arts. Swimming is also one such vital and mandatory life skill that children have to learn.

    For:
    -----
Swimming helps you exercise and build strength. Unlike football or golf, swimming uses all of your body parts. There are several reasons you have to learn swimming at school. Firstly, you don’t have to pay to go swimming at school. Furthermore, the children who cannot afford to pay can learn the basic strokes and skills of swimming at school. If you don’t learn at school then you might not learn anywhere whereas since it is part of the school curriculum, you have to do it. The children go together as a class and can have fun. You can also observe other children’s techniques and improve your own. If you take lessons, you will feel more confident in the water and will be able to deal with any conditions of water. If you are ill or have a problem (e.g. trunks are too small, no cap, no goggles) then obviously you cannot swim.

    Against:
    -----------
You may not go swimming during school time because it wastes lesson time. It takes long to travel and change for swimming; sometimes we don’t get enough time to swim due to children getting changed extremely slowly. If the children go 1 at a time in the pool, we won’t have enough time in the water. If you do not go at school then you have to pay money for swimming outside of school. If you go outside of school it is not compulsory and your teacher will not know if you went or not. You won’t be able to have fun and be accompanied by your class, friends or teachers.

    Conclusion:
    ----------------
As a result the answer to this balanced argument is a Yes because the majority of people say that the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) was correct. So all schools will be going swimming to their nearest swimming pool and swimming there for 30 minutes each, once a week.

  8. Introduction:
Swimming is an important skill to learn. Swimming provides good all round exercise. Swimming can be learned more easily when we are young.

Why it is important to learn to swim:
As well as being a recreational activity that can be enjoyed all year round, swimming skills can also help you survive if you fall down in deep waters by accident and you can also use this skill to save other’s lives if they are drowning.

Why learning to swim at school may not be a good idea:
Some schools may think that organising to take the whole class full of children to the swimming pool and back can be a time consuming activity and it can be expensive as well. The time and money spent on organising swimming trips may be used in other national curriculum activities that cannot be taken up as extra activities outside the school.

    Conclusion:
Swimming can be fun and part of a healthy lifestyle. In my opinion all children of primary school age should be actively learning to swim and should try to improve their swimming skills as much as possible. However, depending on the time and money available to the school it may or may not be a good idea to learn to swim at school. It can always be taken up as an extra activity in children’s own time.

  9. Swimming is a type of sport, it is in the olympics. Swimming is also fun, but it can also save your life.

It is important to learn to swim because if you are playing by a pool or open water and you fall in by accident you could drown if you can't swim. If you are on a boat and you fall in or the boat crashes or tips over you could drown if you can't swim. But also if your friends or family fall in and can't swim if you know how to swim you could save them. My friend Blakeney nearly drowned because he was playing in a pool and he went under water but couldn't swim to get back to the surface, he swallowed lots of water and someone had to get him out of the water and resuscitate him. I was in the pool as well, but I knew how to swim so I could go under the water and I was ok.

Learning to swim at school may not be a good idea because it can be hard to learn to swim in a big group and also you at school you are quite old. I learnt to swim when I was 4, so it was easy for me to learn quickly because I wasn't scared of the water and I learnt with an instructor by myself.

In conclusion I think children should learn to swim at a young age because it is a skill for life and once you know how to swim you can have lots of fun.

  10. Swimming
Should children go swimming at school? Lots of children have left primary school without knowing how to swim.
I think swimming is important to learn because it is a good way of moving your body and it is a lifesaving thing. It is also is fun to a lot of people. Lots of people have died because they did not get a chance to learn how to swim. Swimming is a complete body exercise. So it moves your muscle and arms and legs unlike football. In football most of the people are just using their legs.
Swimming might not be an amazing idea to some people because it will take too much of learning time and parents could take their child to the swimming pool. There is a problem about the swimming hats. That is because when you go with your parents you don’t need one but when you go with the school you need a swimming hat but the reason for that is you need to go to the next l lesson after that.
After all, we have thought about it and we think having swimming lesson at school will be the best idea. It is because swimming is a lifesaving thing.

  11. Ever since a few years ago kids have been taking swimming lessons at school but it has been a hard time getting to the swing pool and back, but it has been good for people to go.

It is good to learn to swim because you can use it in later life if you are stranded
and trying to get back to shore and safely. It can be used to keep fit and will allow you to get closer to reaching the 25 meters required to be able meet the standards of the ASA.

It is hard for schools to take the pupils to the lessons at the pool due to how hard it is to get there and back + they have to be extra fast to make sure none of there lesson time is taken up and the coach isn't late.

  12. I think it is important to learn how to swim because it is a sport that makes you use all parts of your body to be able to swim, and i think this is a good way to keep fit and healthy.
I like to swim and play in the water when I go on holidays so it is important to be a good swimmer.
If you can't swim then going into a pool can be dangerous because you can drown.
Knowing basic swimming can help you manage your body in water.

I think swimming in school is a good idea because it can help the whole class learn to swim together.
I swim at school on Tuesday's and on the weekend but it took a very long time to get a place in the swim school, thats why i was happy to have swimming lessons with my class.
If we didn't have lessons with school some children may not be able to swim.

  13. Swimming at school

Swimming is a very good sport. In swimming, a whole lot of muscles are working together, because we are pushing, pulling and kicking our way through the water.

Swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning. Swimming is essential life skill and we want to be confident that we will master it. We want to go on our holiday, be able to swim ,be safe in the water and have fun.

Sometimes people may say that swimming lessons are not good for schools because they may interrupt other lessons and some children may be afraid of water.

Now when we've heard of both sides I think that swimming is one of the easiest and safest forms of exercise for children and school swimming is an effective way of teaching children how to be safe in and around water.

  14. Is learning to swim important ?
There has been much discussion on whether swimming is to be continued or not. Swimming is a skill we acquired since ancient times. Cave paintings, as old as 2500 years back, have been found in caves showing Egyptian people swimming in olden days.
It has been known that swimming is a good form of exercise. Firstly, swimming helps us to keep fit and build strength. It keeps your heart and lungs healthy. Secondly, it is a useful skill to have, to save yourself and others in emergencies like floods. Moreover, it’s a great sport to have fun like playing water sports. Swimming has been part of the Olympics since 1896.
However, swimming for a long time can cause shoulder pain. In addition, swimming in cold water can cause cramps and hyperthermia. Also, it is not for people with heart problems. Furthermore, you can drown in the water if you don’t be careful while you swim in deep water.
Overall , I feel that knowing swimming is a beneficial than not knowing it. If we take proper precautions while swimming, it can be a lot of fun. As a matter of fact, everyone knows to swim since birth. When you put a new born in the water, he can swim naturally! In Conclusion, we now think that swimming is a skill everybody should have.

    regards,
    Krish.

  15. I am going to write about the reasons for and against learning swimming in school.
I believe that swimming is extremely important because it’s not just fun it is also a live saving skill, if someone is drowning you can save their lives. I also think that you will get the opportunity to use all your muscles and body parts because in other sports you may only use your arms or legs. Swimming will keep you fit and healthy.
One of my arguments against swimming at school is because it could be wasting teachers time and pupil’s time. The school would save money which they could spend on other resources. The time we spend going to swimming lessons could be used for more learning.
I conclude is an essential skill that all children should learn at a young age.

  16. My views For & Against About Swimming

    Introduction:

Swimming is a great skill. It is an activity that uses lots of calories and builds muscular strength. It cools you off and refreshes you in summer. It is a great activity for all age groups.

    Advantages:

It is a good sport that uses the whole body for movement. It prevents from drowning and from danger. It helps you balance,be flexible and build stamina. It is good for you because it improves health. It is a good form of exercise and does not use that much energy. It is better to do it at school because you enjoy more with your friends and if you could not afford other swimming lessons then in schools you might get them free.

    Disadvantages:

The chlorine used to disinfect the water for swimming is a toxin that might lead to asthma and other respiratory problems. It has been found that competitive swimmers develop asthma like problems due to frequent swimming. Your body might absorb chlorine through the skin and by breathing as well. Unventilated indoor pools with stagnant air might have unsafe level of chlorine in the air that is dangerous.

Overall I think swimming is very good sport as it keeps you fit.

    Swimming
    ---------------

Swimming is important because it keeps you fit and it helps use all of the muscles in your body while you are swimming, also it is good for your heart. Swimming can also help save your life in the water if you are drowning in seas, rivers, lakes or even the swimming pool.
If you know how to swim you can even save other peoples lives if you are a lifeguard.
You can even swim from when you are really young to even when you are really old. It is a safe and fun exercise for all ages.

Learning to swim at school is a good thing because you can interact with your friends while your're learning a new skill.
It is important to learn how to swim at school because many children can't afford to have private swimming lessons at home.
Learning at school gives all children a chance to live a fantastic life skill.

On the other hand learning to swim at school is not a good idea because it reduces your learning time in other important subjects such as literacy, maths, science and computing.

In conclusion I think that swimming is a great skill to have and I think it should be taught in all schools as it is part of the National Curriculum.
